Last Wednesday firefighters responded
to an apartment fire at 790 New Paltz Rd.
in Highland after receiving a call at 2:51
pm.
Highland Fire Chief Peter Miller said
upon arriving at the scene the apartment
was filled with black smoke.
“Reportedly the occupant had a blanket over the back of a chair which became
in the proximity of a candle that set it on
fire,” he said.
Miller said they also cut a triangular
hole in the roof to check if the path of the
fire had spread to that area.
“We had a lot of heat up there in the
attic [and] we wanted to make sure there
was no heat retained inside the walls
or anything that might be burning. So
that’s why we checked it out that way,”
he explained.
Miller said the resident was helped out
of the apartment by a neighbor.
“Both of them were evaluated by
Mobile Life Support and both signed off
and were not transported,” Miller said.
Highland received help from the
Milton, Esopus and Clintondale fire
departments.
“We had it knocked down really quickly. Overall the investigation took about
an hour and twenty minutes,” he said.

On Monday the Marlborough Town
Board announced that NYS Sen. William
Larkin [R-39th] obtained a $150,000 grant
through the NYS Municipal Facilities
Program that will be used to complete
the last phase of the Milton Train Station
rehabilitation project – the lead remediation and painting of the exterior of the
station.
Members of the Milton Train Station
Foundation have been restoring the 1883
station for a center that residents will use
and enjoy for generations to come.
Larkin said this grant “will go a long
way to help make the final improvements
and renovations to the Milton Train
Station” and will transform “it into a
historic jewel for the region and a mustsee destination for railroad enthusiasts
throughout the world.”
Supervisor Al Lanzetta said this critical funding would allow the town to
“restore the building to its original glory
and for it to be used as a Community
Center and resource for our Hudson River
Parks.” Lanzetta added that this grant
shows that Sen. Larkin is able to work
with both political parties in order to
“bring back important resources for his
constituency.”
Dan Pinnavaia, President of the Milton
Train Station Foundation, thanked Sen.
Larkin for his help.
