Mary Kay Messenger is a ‘ Woman of Achievement ’
A
Milton woman is among this year ’ s Orange County Women of Achievement .
MaryKay Messenger , a vocalist with the United States Military Academy Band at West Point will be honored in May by the Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson and YWCA Orange County . She will be one of the 2017 honorees at the Tribute to Orange County Women of Achievement ’ s 25th anniversary celebration .
“ Each year , the Tribute to Women of Achievement event introduces us to remarkable women from all walks of life from throughout Orange County who embody Girl Scouts and YWCA ’ s missions to empower women and girls and serve as role models and mentors to them ,” said Pamela Andersen , President & CEO , Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson .
Messenger , who grew up in Newburgh , as MaryKay Hollenbeck , got her musical start by singing in the Saint Francis Church Choir . Her vocal talents helped her spread throughout the Newburgh area , singing in many local churches of many denominations . Her ties to the West Point Band were established at an unusually early age .
“ After I graduated from St . Francis I went to public school ,” Messenger told Catholic New York . “ The course teacher there was a clarinet player for the ( West Point ) band . She asked if I ’ d be interested in singing with the band . They were looking for a young area talent to sing for their Labor Day concert .”

Point and sang her heart out . Called back on stage for an encore , she sang a rousing rendition of Helen Reddy ’ s “ I Am Woman .”
She was invited back and continued to sing with the band as a guest vocalist , until officially joining the Army in 1996 . She went through basic training and is now a Master Sergeant .
From Trophy Point and Eisenhower Hall , she has now sung at some of the world ’ s great stages , including Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall . She has also performed “ God Bless America ” and the

National Anthem in Yankee Stadium , with a World Series appearance on her resume . When not traveling the world , or singing with the band , she ’ s at home in Milton , with her husband David , and daughters Emma and Grace .

More than 250 women from throughout Orange County have been recognized since the award ’ s inception in 1992 . This year ’ s Tribute honorees will be recognized at the 25th Anniversary Tribute to Women of Achievement of Orange County award celebration on Wednesday , May 10 at Anthony ’ s Pier 9 in New Windsor .

The Town of Lloyd is considering purchasing the offices of retiring dentist Yale Barash , located at 8 Grove Street , directly behind Town Hall , giving the town hall some much needed space to expand .
