Throughout the hamlet of Milton hanging flower baskets brightened the storefronts. By MARK REYNOLDS [email protected] The Hamlet of Milton Association [HMA] is at it again – this time they recently gathered up a passel of volunteers and planted a wide variety of colorful flowers and plants in and around the hamlet area, with the simple goal of beautifying where they live and work. HMA is the brainchild of a trio of local business women (and friends) - Vivian Lanzarone, Stephanie Calabrese, C.J. Hartwell - who got together several years ago “over a glass or two of wine” and decided to make a difference in the hamlet. “Today is May 20 – pot party – we planted today,” Lanzarone said. Lanzarone procures her flowers and plants from the Wallkill View Farm Garden Center in New Paltz. “The Ferrantes own it and their flowers are just so healthy and I like to put them in looking nice and mature,” she said. “I want to put them in and - bam - look at that.” The trio is quick to thank many of the families in town for their help with the plantings, all of which go in the ground or in pots in a matter of hours. “We have the Tabascos and the Kents and everybody comes out,” she said. “I am going to say we had about twenty-five people here today and everybody worked their butts off.” Over the winter Lanzarone figures out just what they will need for the annual May planting. “I order everything and then we coordinate all of the potting soil with Jeff [Paladino of Milton Hardware],” she said, adding that the optimum time for planting, to avoid frost, is between Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. Lanzarone said they do plantings not only around the clock tower at the Library but in front of the Post Office, the Milton Fire House, “and Brooklyn Bottling gets one, the Chrysler dealer gets one, the bank gets one and Ginos gets one; we have so many people that are involved.” Lanzarone says she constantly receives positive feedback for their efforts. “Everybody says its so beautiful,” she said with a smile.
