Plattekill dedicates new Veterans Memorial

After the Highland School budget for
2016-17 failed to pass, the School Board
met last week to discuss their options.
The district had presented to the voters
a budget of $41.7 million with a tax levy
of $26.4 million. Although the vote tally
was 728 yes to 568 no, the budget failed
because the yes votes represented 56
percent of the voters but a 60 percent
super-majority vote was needed for it to
pass since the board opted to pierce the
tax cap that was set for Highland at 0.59%.
The bus replacement proposition of
$937,803 did pass, though this only needed
a simple majority vote. The district will
be purchasing seven 65-passenger buses,
one 29-passenger van and one suburban.
But 60 percent of the cost will be later
covered by state transportation aid.
At the opening of the meeting
Board President Alan Barone said it
was disappointing for the board, the
administration, the staff and for members
of the community that the proposed
budget for next year failed to pass. At
this point the board has three options
for 2016-17; present a revised budget with
some reductions, offer voters the same
budget or go to a contingency budget.
Barone noted that for next year’s
budget to stay under the tax cap and
require the normal voter approval of 50
percent plus one, the board would have
to make reductions of approximately
$135,000.
Plattekill Supervisor Joe Croce laid a wreath at the new memorial during the dedication ceremony.
