all . Each day lasts approximately 8 hours and all are there voluntarily and on their own time .
“ We get into search and rescue , fire behavior , hose line advancement , forcible entry and all your basic skills that you need to learn to move on to any other class that you want to take in the fire service ,” he said . “ This is a prerequisite to take all of your other state classes . You have to have this first .”
Erichsen said the class is also offered over a three-month period on two nights and one Saturday per week for three hours each evening .
Erichsen said most of those who attend have less than a year of experience in the field and come to Highland ready to learn .
“ This is an outreach program through the state and we have a bunch of state instructors assigned to Ulster County and we ’ re the ones that run the class ,” he said , adding that this is the third time Highland has hosted the class .
Erichsen said having the class in Highland is advantageous since all of the equipment is readily at the instructor ’ s fingertips .
“ Here we ’ re simulating fire tactics ,” he said “ They ’ re pulling hose lines off the apparatus and checking the nozzle before they go to make sure they have good water volume and there are no kinks in the hose . “ They ’ re learning how to feed the [ water ] line rather than yank it , to not get caught in pinch-points between a wall and a hose and to work smarter and not harder .”
