The Ulster County DMV bus , here pictured in Marlborough , travels throughout the county providing a convenient location for residents to take care of DMV transactions .
By MARK REYNOLDS mreynolds @ tcnewspapers . com
It is not the kind of anniversary associated with a huge celebration but this year the Ulster County DMV bus quietly observes 30 years on the road , providing a convenient service to the residents of Ulster County . For many seniors , it has proven invaluable .
The present bus has been in service for 16 years and prior to that the county had an airstream vehicle that began operating in 1986 . Besides a driver , there are two cashiers who are assisting customers . They handle all of the normal transactions , such as registrations , permits , licenses , putting a car on the road and renewals but they do not do commercial licensing or any enforcement transactions , as each of these are time consuming .
On Monday , the bus is in Marlborough at 1650 Route 9W ; Tuesday in Saugerties at the town hall 4 High St ; Wednesday in Ellenville ( Warwarsing ) at 108 Canal St . Thursday in New Paltz at the VFW Post at 101 Route 208 ; and Friday it alternates between Shandaken ( on the 1st and 3rd Fridays ) at the town hall 7209 Route 28 ; and Wallkill ( 2nd and 4th Fridays ) at the town hall Shawangunk 14 Central Avenue . The hours of operation are 10 a . m . to 1 p . m . and 2 p . m . to 3:30 p . m .
Ulster County Clerk Nina Postupack said when transactions are done on the bus the tax dollars remain in the county .
“ By us traveling throughout the county , it enables our county residents to do their motor vehicle transactions and keep the money here instead of going to a neighboring county or mailing it in or doing it online ,” she said .
Postupack said the county retained approximately $ 75,000 in 2015 .
“ We actually processed over 10,000 transactions and we took in total receipts of $ 613,000 ,” she said , adding that the county is limited to keeping 12.7 percent of each transaction .
Postupack said revenues were off a bit last year because the bus was off the road for a period of time undergoing renovations . She said when this happens , or if inclement weather interrupts service , people are calling to find out when the bus will return “ because people really do rely upon it in the towns .” In addition , revenues have been affected for the past few years because there was a change of 5 to 8 year license renewal periods but that “ kicks back in this year .”
Postupack said after expenses , the county “ may not be making a tremendous amount of money ; are we breaking even ? Yes . Is it a convenience to the residents of the county ? Absolutely . It is more of a customer service for the people .”
