Kirky’s Deli was hit by a vehicle on Saturday, completely demolishing the corner of the building.
Continued from page 1
Proprietor Rob Kirk said the vehicle completely demolished
the corner of the Deli.
“It was just like getting shot with a bullet [and] it was over in
one second, it was done. It happened so fast,” he said, adding that
the deli was not crowded at the time because of the severe cold
weather.
“I looked to my left, I had a young girl there, Paige Dawson,
and made sure she was alright,” he said. “Then I called the cops.”
Kirk saw customer Michael Phelan alert, “sitting on the floor,
and did not have a 2×4 hanging out of his head so I said he’s fine.
Jim Marcus had three fractured ribs and broke two and had a
small puncture hole in his lung. I went over to the vehicle and
I could hear whimpering inside, somebody was crying. I opened
the door and no one was there; a minute and a half and where
did this guy go?”
Kirk went outside of the Deli and fireman Don Schreiber had
Donaldson sitting in a chair, but was visibly upset.
“After that it was just chaos; people came out of the woodwork
and came from everywhere to help,” Kirk said. “You couldn’t ask
for a bunch of better people from Milton. All the Fire Department
was there, the cops were there and there were customers coming
in and people calling asking if they could do anything. Chip
Kent, Stephen Rivieccio and Jimmy Anzalone really stepped
up to help; everyone was just wonderful.” He said Bob Pollock,
owner of Buttermilk Falls Inn and Spa, started raising money by
donating proceeds from his food sales.
Kirk has operated the Deli for 32 years and said the owner,
Geraldine Mannese, has not yet contacted him about rebuilding.
“We’re probably going to need a new roof, a new front and
side,” he said. “If she says go ahead, then we’re good to go, we’ll
start tomorrow. I’ve got plenty of free time here.”
Kirk said driver, Jamal Donaldson, returned to the scene of
the accident.
“He just wanted to tell me he was sorry. I said you fell asleep
coming from work, things happen and told him thanks for
stopping. I want everybody to know that he did that, to me that
meant a lot.”
Kirk concluded by saying, “I just can’t say enough about
everybody helping.”
