Cafe Arts opens in Highland
By MARK REYNOLDS mreynolds @ tcnewspapers . com
Kelly McGinnis has recently opened Cafe Arts in the hamlet of Highland , offering an eclectic mix of fine art by area painters , food dishes she prepares using produce from local farms , convenience grocery items and a line of new clothing for women .
McGinnis has worked in restaurants , retail stores and in office settings but the idea for Cafe Arts has percolated within her “ for years and years ” and finally became reality in late 2016 .
McGinnis said her vision started out with simply coffee and art but it soon “ multiplied ” into clothing and groceries .
“ I have muffins , coffee , tea and cocoa as well as a little candy , seltzers and yohoo . I have healthy soups and egg and chicken sandwiches ,” she said .
McGinnis is hosting a special day at her store on January 14 , starting at 10 a . m . until about 4 p . m .
“ We ’ re going to have some people who do acoustic music and some of its rock music ,” she said . An assortment of food items will also be available .
Currently , McGinnis has fine art paintings on display by Poughkeepsiebased artist Tarryl Gabel .
“ She won the Best Artist award from Hudson Valley Magazine ,” McGinnis pointed out .
In addition , McGinnis has photographs on her walls by April Hubbard and Greg Thompson .
“ I know them so I ask and I do commissions with them ,” she said , adding that she plans to rotate the artwork on a regular basis .
McGinnis has a particular affinity for artists as she herself is a painter , having started in high school . She studied with local Highland artist , the late Seth Nadel at the Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie .
McGinnis said she finds Highland “ interesting .”
“ There is an eclectic mix of people here .” she said . She invites people to visit her shop . “ Instead of being bored , come in and see what it ’ s like and feel free to sit around and do what you want .”
McGinnis is considering adding an art program for young people and perhaps ‘ Paint n ’ Sip ’ events for adults .
Cafe Arts is located at 33 Main St ., in Highland and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a . m . to 6 p . m . McGinnis can be reached at 845-235-9620 .
