Last Saturday a group , known as the Subzero Heroes , raised money through sponsorships by willingly jumping into the freezing waters at Berean Park in Highland to find a cure for Alzheimer ’ s disease . Last year they raised more than $ 100,000 and this year the unofficial total is $ 90,076 . The funds are also used to assist patients and their families who are going through the travails of this dreaded disease . David Sobel , the new President and CEO of the Hudson Valley chapter of the Alzheimer ’ s Association , said they have been around since 1980 and serve seven area counties .

“ Its an amazing opportunity to see these incredible people come out here for this cause ,” he said . “ Its all about what they can do to help people living with Alzheimer ’ s , to help caregivers and their families .”
Their stated mission is to “ eliminate Alzheimer ’ s disease through the advancement of research ; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected ; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health ,” with the ultimate goal of seeing a “ world without Alzheimer ’ s disease .”
Sobel said “ the best thing would be to put all of us out of a job .” He said this event is the kickoff to their “ Walk to End Alzheimer ’ s ” that is scheduled

for October 14 at the Walkway Over the Hudson in Highland . Registration starts at 9am , followed by a ceremony at 10am and step off at 10:30 am . To date they have $ 645 pledged and a goal of raising $ 245,000 . This event is just one of five walks in the Hudson Valley that is scheduled in 2017 .
“ This past year we raised over $ 1 million for the first time ever with all five walks combined ,” he said .
Sobel said unfortunately the disease is on the rise .
“ Right now , someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer ’ s every 66 seconds but by 2050 it will be every 33 seconds ,” he said . “ There are just over 5 million people with Alzheimer ’ s now in the United States and by 2050 there will be
