Highland establishes scholarship
By MARK REYNOLDS mreynolds @ tcnewspapers . com
Last week the Highland School Board established the Sara Pironi Memorial Scholarship . Pironi had just received her Advanced Regents Diploma last June from Highland High School but passed away just two months later in August at the age of 18 after a long battle with cancer .
High School English Teacher Josh Tatum told the board that he would administer the scholarship to “ keep me involved with her and be something that would be within the community .”
Tatum said before slipping into a coma Sara informed her parents of her wishes .
“ She was very , very affected by the younger cancer patients that she met down at Sloan-Kettering and some of the other hospitals that she went to . She asked that any efforts that people continued in her name be given for children ’ s research for cancer .”
Tatum said half of any money raised in her name would go toward a scholarship to a graduating senior , with input from Sara ’ s parents , and the other half donated to the Children ’ s Cancer Research Center . He is anticipating raising and splitting $ 3,000 this year .
Tatum said last year they began a comedy show fundraiser that will continue this year .
Superintendent Deborah Haab said the school auditors have suggested that once the school board approves this , then the funds would be placed in a school district account where the rest of the scholarship monies are kept for the awards in June .
Tatum said what he thought was important to Sara on eligibility for the scholarship .
“ In thinking about the kind of person she was , I don ’ t think she would have wanted a grade point average

requirement . I don ’ t think she wanted a top of the class type of requirement . I just think she would have liked to see that money go to somebody who was kind to their peers and who was active in the school and who showed some leadership ,” he said .
Board President Alan Barone thanked Tatum for “ keeping her memory alive .” The motion to create the scholarship passed unanimously .

Michael Bakatsias , Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Technology for the Marlboro School district , informed the school board that their Smart School Bond Act proposal

is comprised of a 55 / 45 split between infrastructure upgrades and instructional technologies for the students .
The infrastructure upgrades will focus on the school ’ s network , the phone system , security safeguards concerning surveillance , access control and the wiring of the Middle School .
|
The instructional side of their proposal is aimed at providing Chromebooks to all students in grades 6 through 12 . Bakatsias said the district got a “ head start ” through a $ 46,000 grant from NYS Sen . William Larkin that allowed for the purchase of 206 Chromebooks that will be distributed to 156 students in the 8th |
