By SHANTAL RILEY sriley @ tcnewspapers . com
A 48-year-old woman plunged to her death in an apparent suicide over the weekend , New York State Police report . A passing motorist who spotted the woman with her hands on the railing on the westbound side of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge contacted police around 7 p . m . on Sunday .
“ A subsequent investigation revealed that the 48-year-old woman had jumped off of the bridge into the Hudson River prior to police arriving on scene ,” state police said . The police have identified the woman as Melissa Zukowski of Beacon .
A City of Newburgh fire-marine crew recovered the woman ’ s body about an hour and a half later , near the shoreline just south of Beacon .
Around the same time on Sunday , another motorist made a 911 phone call to report a man had jumped off of the Mid Hudson Bridge . The City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department and the New York State Police aviation unit searched the water for two hours but did not find a body , City of Poughkeepsie Det . Lt . Matt Clark said .
“ At this time , I don ’ t think there is any relation between the two incidents ,” said urges safety considerations at Bayside

Last month the Marlboro School district sent a letter to the Marlborough Town Board to voice their concerns about traffic flow , parking and student safety surrounding the Bayside residential development project that is proposed to be built adjacent to the Middle School . The district indicated that these concerns are part of a recent Safe Routes to Schools traffic study that was done by the Ulster County Department of Transportation .
The school district noted that “ The [ school ] board sees the project as an opportunity to remedy many of these safety concerns in a manner that is not burdensome to the taxpayers of either the school district or the town .” Toward

The City of Newburgh Fire Department was notified shortly before 8 p . m . on Sunday .
The crew aboard the Andrew J . Downing fire and rescue boat was able to locate the woman ’ s body within six minutes of the boat ’ s departure from shore , City of Newburgh Fire Chief Terry Ahlers said , thanks to state-of-art technology including a FLIR camera .
that end , the district submitted two proposed traffic configuration maps , urging the developer “ to see the benefits of performing the requested work in order to facilitate a safer environment for district students , nearby residents and future property tenants .”
The district said their two proposed configurations would “ dramatically ” improve the flow of traffic at the Middle School as well as on the feeder roads , enhance safety and lessen traffic congestion on route 9W and on Bayside Avenue during the arrival and departure times of students .
The district listed specific enhancements they would like to see implemented at the Middle School : expansion of the current parking lot along with some retaining wall
“ FLIR stands for , ‘ forward-looking infrared ,’” Ahlers said . “ It allows you to see in the dark and pick up differences in temperature . And , it shows us exact shapes in the water .”
The rescue boat was placed into service in July , replacing a smaller , rescue boat that had been in service for almost 20 years , Ahlers said . The boat was taken out of the water for winter storage in November .
improvements ; new parking spaces on the Bayside property that would be gifted to the school after completion ; new roadway striping and swing gates to limit daytime through traffic ; add two or three new access points to the proposed main roadway of the Bayside project and include sidewalks and another swing gate to allow for parent to drop off and pick up of their children .
The district pointed out that actual traffic patterns may vary to a degree from what is portrayed on their proposed maps but reconfiguration done in conjunction with the development project “ would significantly enhance student and public safety by rectifying known risks .” The district stated that their proposals are a “ starting point ” in what they see as a formal dialog on these immediate issues .
