Matthew Gallagher gave direction to his seventh and eighth grade musicians .
By MARK REYNOLDS mreynolds @ tcnewspapers . com
Earlier this month , Marlboro Middle School Band teacher Matthew Gallagher bid a fond farewell to his students , his fellow teachers and the greater Marlboro Community at his final annual Winter Concert . He is retiring at the end of this month , capping a teaching career in music that began in 1981 .
Gallagher was visibly moved by the outpouring of love from his students and the audience and found it difficult to express his appreciation to the Marlboro school district , where he has taught for the last 15 years of his career .
One of his tympani students summed up how his students feel about him .
“ You have taken us a long way from teaching us in sixth grade to now in eighth grade . I ’ ll miss Mr . Gallagher because there is nobody going to be just like him ; Mr . Gallagher is one of a kind .”
The sixth grade band kicked off the three part concert with “ American
Patrol ,” by composer / arranger F . W . Meacham [ 1856-1909 ]. This was followed by “ Aztec Dance ,” by M . Story and ended with “ Drummer ’ s Christmas Carol ,” arranged by R . Smith .
A combination of seventh and eighth graders took to the stage , opening with “ Yankee Fanfare ,” by T . J . Welker , followed by “ Atlantis ,” and an instrumental version of the holiday classic , “ You ’ re a Mean One , Mr . Grinch ,” a song most recall being sung by Thurl Ravenscroft . The traditional “ Carol of the Bells ” closed this portion of the concert .
For the final segment , the Marlboro Combined Jazz Band , with a mix of Middle and High school students , jumped in with the Ellington / Cunliffe standard , “ I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart ,” followed by their rhythmic interpretation of Earth , Wind and Fire ’ s “ In The Stone .” Guest vocalist Suzanne Quillen gave a soothing rendition of “ You Are The Sunshine Of My Life ,” by Stevie Wonder . The band took it up a few notches with “ What Is Hip ,” by Tower Of Power and closed the concert out with George Clinton and Ron Ford ’ s , “ Give Up the Funk ”.
In a subsequent interview , Gallagher said the concert was a big success .
“ The kids played great and it was very emotional and very hard knowing that it was my last concert ,” he said .
Gallagher has taught from the elementary through high school level during his long career . He said the final concert was bittersweet .
“ I felt that 36 years , its time to let some new blood in here ,” he said , adding that he has no plans for the near future . “ Nothing much to start , I ’ m going to relax and catch up on some sleep .”
Gallagher reflected upon his decision to become a teacher .
“ My reason for going into teaching was because my father was a band teacher . He was in a tragic car accident when I was in the eighth grade and he had permanent brain damage . It was pretty traumatic but I just remember how the community loved him and he did so much for the community and so much for
