Amedore announces aid to libraries

Senator George Amedore announced that four libraries within the 46th Senate District in Ulster County have been allocated to receive more than $ 235,000 in state aid designated to help public libraries with construction projects .
The funds are part of $ 24 million in capital funds for public library construction and broadband infrastructure projects included in the 2017-18 state budget .
Ulster County libraries within the 46th Senate District who have been designated to receive funding include :
Highland Public Library -- $ 62,292.00 for interior work on the new building , including technology installation and milling .
Many of New York ’ s more than 1,000 local public libraries are unable to accommodate users with disabilities , are energy inefficient , and do not have resources to provide adequate Internet and electronic technologies to users . Many do not have sufficient space to house the library ’ s expanding collection , address the need for adequate meeting room , or provide for public access computers .
This year ’ s state budget included $ 34 million for projects that will be announced in Summer 2019 .

Plattekill endorses police officer in school

town enters into an agreement with the district he would like for it to be a shared post and that it not be a full time position .
“ We don ’ t want one Police Officer there to turn that into a full time job ; it ’ s a grant that ’ s going to run out ,” he said .
Croce said he would leave that decision up to Chief Ryan .
“ As he says in his letter , we do have trouble sometimes getting officers to work the D line , which is 8 to 4 , basically . In light of that I believe that ’ s why he talked about possibly adding another officer ,” he said .
Croce said it appears the idea is to establish a police presence in each one of the three elementary schools . He said he would be speaking with the town ’ s bookkeeper on how to make the billing work .
DePew said he is “ 100 %” in favor of the posting but is cautious , “ given the fact that it is a grant , grants run out and I would hate to have a problem funding this and turning our part time police department and turning it into a full time police department .”
Croce agreed with DePew but believes Chief Ryan would like to hire an individual for this position , “ but he would still be limited to the part time rules and could not work more than 1,040 hours in a year .”
Croce said the officer could be walking the halls , possibly entering a classroom at the start of a class and have the teacher introduce the officer to the kids , “ and emphasize this is your friend ... I think it is a very good idea and something the parents would appreciate that the school district and the town of Plattekill are trying to do something to make the school a little bit safer .”
Croce said with what is being reported in the news , “ it ’ s terrible to even consider doing this , as far as I ’ m concerned , but in the interest of trying to keep the children safe , I ’ m very much in favor of it .”
