you just called back. We beg and implore that the trials
he suffered here on earth be counted in his favor and that
our prayers will soften and shorten what he still might
have to experience...Help him to free himself from matter,
give light and self-awareness and have him overcome
the temporary confusion that accompanies the return to
spirit life.”
Steve Gold worked for Skartados for five years as his
Chief of Staff.
“Frank was really a different kind of guy and not
like your usual politician,” Gold recalled. “He didn’t
really want to stand in front of a camera or in front of a
microphone. That really wasn’t his way, he just wanted
to do what was right and he didn’t really want to get any
credit for the things he did.”
Gold called Skartados, “one of the most honest men
that I’ve met. Whatever he said was the truth. Frank
would never yell, though I deserved it many times,
he never did, never raised his voice. He was always a
gentleman.”
Gold said Skartados loved his farm in Milton and
tending to his animals.
“It was the life he knew when he was over in Greece,
raised by his family who is with him now and have
been with him since he was sick,” Gold said. “But of all
the people in the world that he loved the most it is his
daughter Alyssa. She was the flame in his heart.”
Gold said Frank never held a grudge and was never
angry with a soul. “It’s why Frank walked this path,
a path that anybody would have been proud to walk
in their lives. It was almost like a Disney story of the
immigrant coming here and doing good and good is the
most that Frank would ever say if he ever wanted to talk
about anything he’s done...he never wanted to boast or
brag about a single thing. He loved his friends, he loved
his family and all of his nephews. He is a man who had a
really big heart and we’re going to miss him.”
Fr. John Angel and chanter Basil Vardopoulos from
St. Nicholas Church offered prayers for Frank, with Fr.
Angel concluding by saying, “We are all on a journey in
life and Frank is an islander who are all on journeys. Most
importantly it is the experiences that we learn along our
journey in life. May his soul find rest and peace.”
Angelique Young, 48, of Poughkeepsie was arrested April
