SBC celebrates beauty of holiness

n August 9, Salvationists from across the
territory gathered at the Lake Junaluska
Conference and Retreat Center for the
annual Southern Bible Conference.
Delegates were joined by special guest
speakers Major Amy Reardon, Captain Andy Miller
III, and Dr. Bill Ury, who led Bible sessions centering
on this year’s theme, the Beauty of Holiness.
The week opened with a special concert by Hall of
Fame artist and five-time Grammy winner Larnelle
Harris, who was later joined onstage by Cali Colbert
for a special duet. Following the opening meeting,
delegates were invited to a Lakeside Luau hosted by
Southern Territorial Headquarters.
Daily Bible sessions began the next morning with a
rotation of lectures from the three main speakers, each
looking at holiness through a different lens.
Dr. Ury led a Bible study on the book of Leviticus,
discussing the importance of sacrifice for cleanness
and holiness. Major Reardon focused on different
spiritual disciplines, including the concept of
simplicity, encouraging delegates to truly turn their
resources over to God.
“May we be wise and appropriate with how we use
the resources God has given us,” she said.
Captain Andy Miller III spoke passionately
throughout the week on several topics, including the
idea of God as the Great Recycler.
“God can take your garbage and recycle it and
make you pure,” he said.
Thursday evening featured former NFL player
Oscar Roan, who returned to the conference for ARC

celebrated a significant landmark
this year – 75 years since the
inaugural Southern Territory Music
Institute.
A week of celebration at Camp Hoblitzelle,
Texas, saw 225 delegates participate in a
variety of tracks including brass band, praise
band, dance, drama, vocal majors, piano
and various intensive leadership classes for
instrumental conductors and for worship,
choral and creative arts leaders.
Colonels Robert and Gwenyth Redhead of
the Canada and Bermuda Territory were the
special guests. Colonel Gwenyth Redhead
brought daily devotions focused on prayer,
reflection and time with God. She also
concluded each day with thoughtful vespers
and sealed orders. Bookending each day in this
manner is not new for TMI, but was certainly
one of the many highlights.
Colonel Robert Redhead, former
International Staff bandmaster and Canadian
Staff bandmaster and world-renowned
composer, brought great spiritual leadership
to the musical groups. This giant of Salvation
Army music connected with the young people
in a very special way – always emphasizing the
words behind the music, and why we do what
we do – to glorify God.
