“ There are so many things that have aligned and come together up to this point . It ’ s uncanny ,” Shiroma said .
The signs were too strong to ignore .
Restoration over renovation
Spillmann and Shiroma made the decision to travel nearly 1,000 miles to see the Bradley home . While staying at The Continental Hotel on Centerville ’ s historic downtown square , the couple met Alison Fraser , CEO of The Morgan E . Cline Foundation .
The foundation , named after late philanthropist , entrepreneur , advertising executive and real estate preservationist Morgan Cline , aims to fulfill his “ vision of fostering viable and thriving communities in and around Appanoose County , Iowa by collaborating to provide resources and professional support to local charitable organizations .” During his lifetime , Cline invested heavily in the Centerville community , including restoring the Bradley home into The Shoppes at Bradley Hall .
The foundation was looking for a specific buyer to restore , not remodel , the home .
“ The foundation had a specific application process [ to vet buyers ] and had turned down a lot of offers ,” Spillmann said . “ They didn ’ t want people tearing down walls , painting the woodwork , turning it into offices ,
things like that .”
After a “ mini interview ,” Fraser and the foundation found the perfect fit for the future of the Bradley home — Spillmann and Shiroma . The couple closed on the home Dec . 10 , 2021 .
“ I ’ ll always remember Allison said , ‘ It ’ s like Morgan Cline chose you ,’” Spillmann said . “ We keep his photo on the master staircase and thank him for letting us continue his work and legacy .”
‘ It takes a village ’
Since its inception in 1909 , the Bradley home has been a historical focal point of the Centerville community .
Over the years , the home has been both a public school and community college administration building , nursing home and , most recently , The Shoppes at Bradley Hall .
The home was originally built for D . C . Bradley , a prominent banker in Centerville , and his family . The home was designed by Wetherell & Gage Architects and was originally slated to cost $ 30,000 . However , it ended up costing $ 100,000 , or $ 2.6 million in today ’ s dollars , with 22 rooms and 10,000 square feet .
Described as “ delightfully unconventional ” and “ picturesque ” by Country Homes Magazine in 1921 , the Bradley home is unique in its Anglo Japanese architectural style . Spillmann and Shiroma believe it ’ s possible
