“ I never , ever thought I would live to be 100 ,” Ralph Voss Jr . of New Albany told News and Tribune reporter Brooke McAfee as she interviewed him a few days before his birthday Jan . 7 .
“ Ever . And here I am .”
But he is not alone in celebrating that centennial milestone . And , the line behind him is getting longer . “ By 2060 , nearly one in four Americans will be 65 years and older , the number of 85-plus will triple , and the country will add a half million centenarians ,” the Census Bureau projected in a population report updated in 2019 . Voss said he feels “ great .” He lived independently until he was injured from a fall about a year and a half ago . He now lives at Green Valley Care Center in New Albany .
“ I feel like maybe 50 years old other than my left leg , which I broke about a year ago , and they have never been able to get the pain out of it where I can walk , so I may never walk again ,” he said . The Census report says that in less than two de cades , older adults are projected to outnumber kids for the first time in U . S . history . The middle-aged now outnumber children , but the country will reach a new milestone in 2034 , the Census report says . The projection is that in 2034 older adults will edge out children in population size
