What started with a positive personal experience with chiropractic has led to an unfaltering desire to help the New Albany community rediscover health and wellness . Chris Rasmussen , a licensed chiropractor , opened Rasmussen Chiropractic LLC at 2652 Charlestown Road over 30 years ago , with the goal of relieving people of their pain .

Rasmussen had his first encounter with the world of chiropractic when he suffered a herniated disk in college that he was told he ’ d need surgery to repair .
“ We chose chiropractic as a last resort effort to prevent surgery . My treatment was very successful and it made me look at chiropractic as a possible career choice , and that ’ s where this started ,” he said .
After his treatment , Rasmussen attended the Cleveland College of Chiropractic in Kansas City . Because he saw what chiropractic care could do firsthand , he had already accepted and believed in the work he was doing .
Chiropractic has become increasingly accepted in the community throughout
Rasmussen ’ s career .
“ The acceptance of chiropractic today is excellent compared to what it was when I was first out of school ... Chiropractic today is more accepted as a specialty and has a specific fit into the medical system ,” he said .
Once people began to understand chiropractic care and realize that it has its own niche , the practice became more welcomed . In fact , about 75 % of Rasmussen Chiropractic ’ s clientele is referred by friends and family .
“ The majority of what scares people away from chiropractic is lack of knowledge of what chiropractic does and what chiropractic is ,” Rasmussen said .
As chiropractic became more customary , Rasmussen Chiropractic was able to begin fostering relationships with other medical professionals .
After analyzing a client ’ s problem , Rasmussen looks for the treatment that is going to help them the most , whether it ’ s treating them at his practice or referring them elsewhere .
“ If someone comes into me and they ’ ve got an issue that is not a chiropractic type of issue and I find it , I ’ m going to be referring them back to their medical doctor or back to an orthopedic surgeon or whoever , ” he said .
Getting referrals from other professionals shows the attitude change towards chiropractic as Rasmussen said it was rare to get a referral from a medical doctor .
Though it may have had a late acceptance in modern society , the origins of chiropractic go back to joint manipulation in ancient times . Chiropractic itself started in 1895 after Daniel David Palmer performed the first recorded chiropractic adjustment .
The top three main things that chiropractic care effectively treats according to Rasmussen are : back pain , neck pain and headaches .
These issues can arise out of spinal misalignments and mechanical issues . As a chiropractor , Rasmussen and his colleague , Bryan Guess , analyze how a client ’ s spine is able to bend , move and accomplish activities .
The skeleton ’ s design was meant to resist gravity and weight bearing by absorbing the stress . The spine absorbs 60 % of mechanical resistance to stress , according to Rasmussen .
“ When God designed our spine He designed it to be aligned and to function in a specific way . So what causes things to become distorted or deviated is postural habits , repetitive activities ,
