It ’ s time to celebrate our generational businesses

There ’ s a lot of work that goes into keeping a business open for one year , let alone for multiple generations .

But it ’ s happening all across Southern Indiana and in this issue of Southern Indiana Business Magazine , we are honoring our generational businesses .
You ’ ll hear from Opening Gates , Inc . an equine therapy center in Clark County that ’ s helping people heal in our area , all on land that ’ s been owned by the family for a century . Reporter Jen Selinsky talked to a number of businesses who are giving back to to the community , including the Weber Group in Sellersburg , Orange Clover Cafe and Schmitt Furniture .
The Berry Shed , owned by Loftus Farms , has been around in Georgetown since before the interstate was laid in the area . You ’ ll hear from the owners , along with others in Brooke McAfee ’ s story
about how businesses that have been around since before many of us were born are still moving forward .
In this issue ’ s Human Resources column , Anna Hinton with Ivy Tech offers her expert advice , and tips , on how to run an HR department even for a smaller , family-owned business .
Finally , we will be featuring generational businesses that are newer to the area . The Alcove , Bad Cat Boutique and Close Enough Cafe in downtown Jeffersonville are owned across local families . A few cocktail recipes to spice up the season from the Alcove will be featured .
Minniequa Johnson , owner of Royal Couture Treats Boutique , employs her kids and offers a perspective on what it ’ s like to pass a business to the next generation while building it .
Hope you ’ ll enjoy supporting these businesses as much as we enjoyed writing about them .
