A veteran of World War II , James V . Benton learned the trade through watchmakers ’ school . As Louisville ’ s Bacon ’ s Department Store was thriving in the 1950s , Benton provided jewelry expertise for the chain . At the height of their expansion , Benton managed the inventory and sales for six locations in the area , including the Bacon ’ s in southern Indiana . Mercantile Stores , which owned Bacon ’ s , was acquired by Dillard ’ s in 1998 . The Bacon ’ s name was retired , and the Benton ’ s jewelry services were no longer needed .
Benton opened stores with two locations , one in Louisville ’ s Bashford Manor Mall and one at the present location in Jeffersonville on Court Avenue . Jim passed away in 2009 and his wife Betty continued management of the store . Upon her death in 2019 , the ownership of Benton Fine Jewelry was
