“ With people coming out here to pick their own produce , it just became a natural conversation : ‘ OK , what else could we offer ?’” Buba-Kruer said . “ So strawberries turned into apples turned into peaches ... it ’ s just a natural extension of the U-pick operation we have .”
The sales start the day after Thanksgiving and run through the day before Christmas Eve . From the farm market , families can choose a cut tree or on with roots intact , to be planted after the holidays . But the big draw is the opportunity to choose your own , cut it yourself and bring it home .
“ The Christmas tree U-cutting operation is very , very popular ,” Buba-Kruer said . “ We start getting calls about it in early November .”
She said the busiest time is about from the start until about mid-December , where multiple wagons run all weekend to where the trees are planted . Huber ’ s provides the saw for cutting , and helps shake the trees to remove loose needles before wrapping to for the trip home .
“ An entire family will come out , some of them have been doing it for generations ,” she said . “ The grandparents , parents , children , all going out on the wagon , picking that perfect tree and then bringing it back in .”
Floyd County Purdue Extension Educator Gina Anderson said when selecting a live tree , it ’ s important to keep safety precautions in mind . With cut trees , this includes not getting one until needed , making sure the branches are pliable and keeping it well-watered .
She said growing trees can be a difficult operation because of the time involved , and what could happen during that decade or more of growing time . The trees could be affected by things harsh weather ,
