FROM THE EDITOR Trending toward success B usinesses that rest on their laurels seldom are lauded. There are those that take care of the bottom line. Others not only turn a profit, but also invest in their workers on whose backs rest the companies’ success. Business trends ebb and flow like the ocean’s tide, but they are the waves that carry our entrepreneurial spirit. Successful business owners, whether of a startup or a stalwart, embrace inno- vation and change. Oftentimes, that starts with what’s trending. Take for instance… The Do It Yourself craze, and meet Roger and Tina Bonesteel. When the woodworking hobbyists moved to Southern Indiana, they found options on buying small amounts of lumber for their projects limited — so they decided to grow, mill and sell their own. They now have a successful business in Sellersburg, serving the needs of DiYers through-out the region. How about… A business where dogs are welcome to accompany their humans to work. Meet Ze- nebia Law, supervisor of Indiana programs at The Center for Women and Families in New Albany. Zenebia is big into self-care, so not only are dogs allowed at work, on some days so are pajamas and movies. The reimagined workplace includes a self-care room where staff can meditate, create art or relax in a massage chair. 4 March / April 2020 Speaking of reimagining… Local philanthropist Andrew Takami decided to reinvent him- self at 40. He’s lending his expertise to mitigate the distraction of fundraising for nonprofits, so they can return to their core mis- sions. And he’s doing it for “the public good.” That’s inspiring. Also consider… The “side hustlers” among us. Those whose money-making side gigs are ever so dif-ferent from their day jobs. You won’t believe who’s dashing to your door with takeout.
