For her family, the DIY adventure began when they came to Maker 13 to engrave their Bibles. Today, they run a successful Etsy shop and wholesale to several stores. “I wanted to have something that my kids could work if they wanted to and be creative,” she said. “They’re a big part of the business, too. I love that they can see what goes into a business, so that when they get older, then they can do something like this.” Another member, Donna McDonald, embroiders personalized apparel and casket overlays for local funeral homes, using the shop’s industrial embroidery machine. A 34-year veteran of the embroidery business, McDonald is the owner of Making You Consciously Aware, an organization that creates Christian and positive apparel aimed at helping people gain knowledge and grow. Beyond her own work, McDonald teaches courses on using the embroidery machines at Maker 13 and is working on cheat sheets for other members. She’s always made her own way, and can’t imagine any other kind of life. “Some people can sit in an office and do that all day long, and that’s great for them” she said. “Some of us, our mindset is somewhere else even though our body might be sitting there. It’s just something about your spirit that won’t allow you to just be still.” Maker 13 began as Maker Mobile, a traveling workshop that brings a mini version of its permanent space Southern Grit co-owner Shelly Daughtery puts the finishing touches on a hand crafted piece she created. Like many other DIY’ers, Daughtery uses the resources at Maker 13 to help produce her goods. 22 March / April 2020
