COVER STORY
mom of four, homeschool educator and
owner of New Market Farmhouse. She
spends about two to three hours a week
fulfilling orders at the space, and often
brings her kids along.
For her family, the DIY adventure began
when they came to Maker 13 to engrave
their Bibles. Today, they run a successful
Etsy shop and wholesale to several stores.
“I wanted to have something that my
kids could work if they wanted to and be
creative,” she said. “They’re a big part of
the business, too. I love that they can see

they get older, then they can do something
like this.”
Another member, Donna McDonald,
embroiders personalized apparel and
casket overlays for local funeral homes,
using the shop’s industrial embroidery
machine. A 34-year veteran of the
embroidery business, McDonald is the
owner of Making You Consciously Aware,
an organization that creates Christian and
positive apparel aimed at helping people
gain knowledge and grow.
Beyond her own work, McDonald
teaches courses on using the embroidery
machines at Maker 13 and is working on
cheat sheets for other members. She’s
always made her own way, and can’t
imagine any other kind of life.
“Some people can sit in an office and
do that all day long, and that’s great for
them” she said. “Some of us, our mindset
is somewhere else even though our body
might be sitting there. It’s just something
about your spirit that won’t allow you to
just be still.”
Maker 13 began as Maker Mobile,
a traveling workshop that brings a
mini version of its permanent space
Southern Grit co-owner Shelly Daughtery puts the finishing touches on a hand crafted piece she created. Like many other DIY’ers, Daughtery uses the
resources at Maker 13 to help produce her goods.
