Blue Cross rescue ponies named in honour of ‘ Bake off ’
Seven neglected ponies being cared for by Blue Cross following a life of suffering have been named after breads as a tribute to BBC ’ s The Great British Bake Off . The team at Blue Cross Rolleston Rehoming Centre are big fans of the programme and they hope that the quirky names will draw more attention to the ponies , who are now ready to be rehomed .
‘ Thoroughbread ’ coloured cobs Bagel , Brioche , Ciabatta , Crumpet , Crouton , Panini and Pumpernickel were admitted to Blue Cross , after being rescued by the RSPCA . All no more than a year old they were severely underweight and infested with worms . Their thick winter coats were matted and lice infested , concealing painful sores . Their pitiful lack of muscle and badly overgrown feet suggested that they had been confined to small spaces , unable to move freely and with very little access to food . soaring . They have gained weight and all seem to be in good health , except Panini who is still a little lethargic . Blood tests revealed raised liver enzymes so he is now on a course of medication .
Catherine Read , Blue Cross Head Groom at Rolleston , said : “ To us these ponies are the best thing since sliced bread ! Everyone loves Bake off and we hope that their unusual names will help highlight their plight so that they can find the loving homes they so deserve . Who knows , maybe Mary Berry or Paul Hollywood might be interested in coming to meet them ! Then , in keeping with the bread theme we can all raise a ‘ toast ’ to their healthy , happy futures .”
Blue Cross will shortly be looking for experienced , short-term homes for the ponies until they are four years old and mature enough to begin training to start ridden work . To find out more about how you can give Bagel , Brioche , Ciabatta , Crumpet , Crouton , Panini or Pumpernickel a home or make a donation to Blue Cross please visit www . bluecross . org . uk .
Handling the ponies was difficult at first as they were all very timid and wary but slowly the experienced Blue Cross grooms were able to build their trust and progress with their training . Now several months later they are all happy to be groomed and led and their confidence is info @ southernhorsemagazine . co . uk Page 59
