BOOK REVIEW
Animals in the First
World War
by Peter Street
Heroes of a different kind
July the 1st marks 100 years since the Battle of the
Somme, one of World War One’s most significant
events, in which more than one million men were
wounded or killed. As we pause this summer to
remember those soldiers who made the ultimate
sacrifice on the Somme battlefields, a new book
takes a look at how it wasn’t just soldiers who
‘fought’ in the First World War and why animals
also played an important role.
Most people are familiar with the use of horses
and their often heroic actions in the
First World War, but what about
camels, monkeys, canaries and
even the mighty elephant? From
mascots to messengers, animals
played a hugely important role in
almost every aspect of wartime life
and in this wonderfully illustrated
book you learn about how they were
trained and used and hear some of
their incredible individual stories.
The book also goes beyond the
battlefield and explores the role
pets played in the war, and the plight
of animals on farms, zoos and in
the street. The result is a wonderful
collection of stories that will shock,
delight and move you in equal measure.
“A truly inspiring book that reminds us all
of the important role that animals have
played and still play in our lives. Well worth
reading and the best thing about this book is
that you are contributing to a fantastic charity
if purchased from the Royal British Legion.”
