A Living Legend

1984 I was pastoring in Morehead, KY and was responsible for securing the ministry services of a Music Evangelist for a regional indoor campmeeting for the congregations of the Church of God in Rowan County, KY.

While I had heard of Rev. Jim Hill (What A Day That Will Be…Author and singer) I had never met him.

I was asked to call and see if he would be available to come do the music for that years meeting. I called and he said yes to the invitation and served that year with Dr. Willard Wilcox in a great campmeeting.

During the week of services I had the privilege of entertaining both of these giants along my path. We played golf, fished, ate fish, had a Gospel Jam session or two at the home of another Eastern Kentucky singing legend, C.R. Lewis.

What a fantastic week in the life of this young preacher/pastor.

Jim Hill and I talked about his days on the road with the Golden Keys, legendary Statesmen and Stamps Quartets and even his days traveling with Elvis Presley.

I was totally mesmerized by the stories of the life and times of people who were my heroes.

Jim told me the story of writing one of the greatest Gospel songs ever sung, “What A Day That Will Be.”
