A Door Plus More for your Spring Gardening

By Judy Hanks Pimperl

A s soon as April rolls around , Southern Belles start putting together a plan for the new

plants they intend to plant . If you ’ re an avid gardener then you most likely had the urge to get your hands dirty in the garden back in March . But even in the coastal south , March is a little early to plant most things as nights can still drop down to freezing . You may however , have gotten your garden space ready by doing some final raking and preparing of the soil .
When it comes time to get our hands dirty , not all of us are fortunate enough to have a designated potting shed for our work and prep area , but with a little creative space planning , you can turn a small outside corner into your potting area . A small space on your porch can work well . One idea is to start with a discarded old or vintage door , add a shelf and a couple of legs ( look for discarded objects ). Some old hooks can be repurposed to the top of the door to hold hanging baskets . If the glass is missing , the opening can make a nice place to feature a piece of artwork . To hold the potting soil mix a vintage wash pan works nicely . It is a good idea to have a couple of small tables nearby ; one to hold the potting soil while the other one serves as a work surface . A wire basket can hold small clay pots and add to the vintage appeal of your makeshift potting shed .
