Health Risks of Vaping and E-Cigarettes

Breathing Problems : Vaping can cause irritation in the lungs and airways , making it hard to breathe . It can cause coughing , wheezing , and other breathing issues . The inhalation of e-cigarette aerosol can damage lung tissue , potentially leading to conditions like bronchitis and other respiratory diseases . 2 . Heart Health : Nicotine increases your heart rate and blood pressure , which can stress your heart . This can increase your risk of heart disease , especially if you vape for a long time . Additionally , some e-cigarette liquids contain harmful substances like formaldehyde , which can have detrimental effects on cardiovascular health .
3 . Addiction : Nicotine is highly addictive . Many teens who start vaping end up becoming addicted to nicotine , which can be hard to quit . Nicotine addiction can cause anxiety , mood swings , and intense cravings .
4 . Toxic Chemicals : The liquid in e-cigarettes contains chemicals that can be harmful . Some of these chemicals , like formaldehyde , can damage your lungs and even increase the risk of cancer .
5 . Danger of Explosions : Although rare , some e-cigarettes have exploded because of battery problems . This can cause serious injuries like burns or broken bones .
Efforts to Reduce Access to Vaping
Effective , January 1 , 2025 , Kentucky House Bill 11 became effective , banning the sale of all flavored e-cigarettes unless they are FDA approved . This effort represents legislative action to greatly reduce youth access to flavored vapes . E-cigarettes authorized by the FDA only include products from name brands of the following : Logic , NJOY and Vuse .
Locally , the Adanta Regional Prevention Center has created a social media campaign , called “ Choose You ” Kentucky . Through the Choose You campaign , efforts are being directed at prevention of the use of vaping and smoking through education , support and community collaboration .
