" So we accepted the challenge," said Allen. " From there, community leaders quickly came together. Organizations including Lake Cumberland Tourism, See Somerset, Pulaski County Government, the City of Somerset, City of Burnside, Somernites Cruise, SPEDA, the Chamber, Readers to Leaders, and many additional partners joined forces.... When this group gets in a room it is not just conversation— it ' s action."
Allen, Ikerd, Julie Harris of Triple Edge Creative, began building the campaign itself— creating the brand, launching the website, developing partnerships and organizing the marketing effort for Lake Cumberland 250 around themes designed to resonate with the heartland of America, of which Somerset is a part: Patriotism. Community pride. Authenticity. American traditions. Family-friendliness. And of course, good old Kentucky hospitality.
" We wanted this to feel genuine. Not corporate. Not manufactured," said Allen. " We wanted people to experience the kind of Fourth of July celebration many Americans feel nostalgic for: flags waving downtown, families gathering together, fireworks over the lake, music playing, and neighbors celebrating side-by-side."
Small Towns Shine
Ikerd is proud of how downtown Somerset will come alive for Lake Cumberland 250. On Thursday, June 25, The Virginia Theater will show the all- American favorite " Grease " as part of its Classic Movie Night Series; the next night, The Virginia will host The Highwaymen Show: American Outlaw Tribute, featuring music by the iconic grouping of Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson. Somernites Cruise is that weekend, and the Master Musicians Open Mic Night will be held at Finders Keeper on Wednesday, July 1.
All of those events, plus what ' s already present that makes downtown Somerset such a charming small town environment— the specialty shops, bars, restaurants, and more— make it so " there is truly something for everyone," said Ikerd.
If Somerset is a small town, then Burnside— even if it is " the only town on Lake Cumberland," as it bills itself— is comparatively tiny. Yet because of its status as a hub of local tourism, Burnside is all about extending a welcoming hand to visitors and those Americana values are the same ones Mills was inspired by in bringing Burnside into the Lake Cumberland 250 fold.
" For Burnside, this celebration is about capturing the true feel of small-town America. It’ s about neighbors coming together, families spending time side by side, and visitors feeling welcomed the moment they arrive," said Mills. " We’ re emphasizing that through simple, meaningful experiences— live music in the park, local food, and spaces where people can slow down, connect, and enjoy the day together. It’ s not just about the event itself, but the sense of community behind it."
Burnside ' s Lake Cumberland 250 celebration will be held on Saturday, June 27, with a day full of patriotic, family-friendly festivities, purposed to bring community members together in recognition of America ' s proud history of 250 years, including the sacrifices made in the past and the nation ' s continued progress.
Live entertainment will feature the powerful sounds of the Somerset Big Band, the area ' s very own instrumental ensemble, as well as Marty Pennycuff and Logan Purcell. There will be food trucks, inflatables, a special memorial honoring military veterans, and to close things out, fireworks— but don ' t worry, Thunder Over Burnside will also still take place in September as usual.
" In the end, we want people to leave not just remembering the event, but
