Summer means different ways of having fun for each of us

By Christopher Harris Editor
Summer fun. It ' s a simple term that brings to mind so many familiar ideas— sights, sounds, smells, even flavors that are lodged in our memories.
From swimming pools and hot dogs as a kid, to enjoying warm evenings on restaurant patios listening to live music or spending time in nature, we all have our own version of what " summer fun " means to us.
That ' s what we celebrate in this edition of Southeast Kentucky Life. We ' re now in the thick of summer, and July represents some of the most iconic parts of the season, like fireworks, cookouts, and of course, long, lazy days on Lake Cumberland.
There may be no better way to cool off in these hot months than with sweet frozen treats and that ' s exactly what you can get at Gigi ' s homemade ice cream. It ' s more than just a place to get something yummy, however— it ' s an example of the " American Dream " in action, the perfect thing to read about on the Fourth of July or whenever you pick up this magazine.
Outdoor fun is an essential part of the summer experience, but not many people spend their time outside with bees— not voluntarily, anyway. Gunnar Coe doesn ' t see them as pests at the summer picnic, however, but as both something fun and a building block for a successful business. At only 14 years old, Coe has managed to do incredible things with such a vital part of the ecosystem, and you ' ll get to read his story in this edition of SEKYL.
If you ' re around the lake in the southern part of the county, you might want to visit General Burnside Island for a round of golf on their top-flight course, then pop into Mandy Mac ' s Lucky Pint Pub and Kitchen for an authentic taste of Irish cuisine, one of the only places in this area to offer it.
Read about all that and more in the pages of Southeast Kentucky Life this month. It ' s the perfect summer read, whether you ' re comfortable inside with air conditioning, sitting out by the pool, or anywhere else one could imagine!
