Shows Full Stomachs Mean Warm Hearts

When most people think of the Christmas holidays, one of the most enduring traditions is families gathering together to share a special Christmas dinner.
Unfortunately, for thousands of Kentucky families, food insecurity is a daily struggle year round.
For those families, just providing enough food for their families to survive week-to-week is a challenge and a large Christmas dinner is merely an unachievable dream.
The latest statistics from Feeding America, the national umbrella organization that works with food banks nationwide, show that 19 of the most food-insecure counties in the country are located in central and eastern Kentucky.
Nearly 280,000 people, or 18.2 percent of the people living in those counties, face hunger on a daily basis.

God’ s Food Pantry, located at 119 South Central Avenue, has been meeting those needs for the past 43 years.
This year, God’ s Food Pantry has provided an average of 1,400 families per month with carts of food in their regular supplemental cart program.
They also provided another additional box of food to the 400 seniors included in the cart program.
God’ s Food Pantry, one of the largest food pantries in the state, receives no federal funding and is entirely donation funded.
And with a yearly budget of $ 350,000, that speaks volumes about the amount of community support the organization has.
