Midway Veterinary Hospital: Keeping our furry friends feeling healthy and happy

By Bob Flynn
Midway Veterinary Hospital has been providing quality pet care in Somerset and the Lake Cumberland area for almost 50 years.
During that time Midway has grown into the largest veterinary hospital in the region and has become the most trusted source for families as far away as Tennessee who need vet services for their four-legged family members.
Located at 3236 South U. S. 27, Midway meets the needs of their clients ' pets of all sizes and breeds from birth to end of life care.
Dr. Kevin Pettit, Dr. Ashley April and Medical Directors Dr. Sherry Cosson and Dr. David Mullins lead the staff at Midway Veterinary Hospital.
Each doctor has a designated room technician that assists them to ensure that each pet is given top notch specialized care during their entire visit.
The staff at Midway treats each animal as if it were their own and clients can rest assured that their pets are showered with love from the moment they enter the hospital until their departure and their babies are well taken care of.
The doctors at Midway perform many types of surgeries using state-of-the-art equipment to help treat diseases and conditions in pets and to repair injuries. Surgeries done include orthopedic, dental, soft tissue, ocular, mass removal, wounds, C-sections and spay and neutering which are all done in a completely sterile dedicated surgical suite to prevent infection and crosscontamination.
Many of the surgeries are done using surgical lasers that reduce bleeding and lessen the risk of infection as to speed up the healing process.
The procedures are done under anesthesia with a technician monitoring the patient using electronic patient monitoring equipment. Pain management is also provided and Vets provide instructions for at home care.
Surgeries, including emergency surgeries, are done during regular business hours.
Pre-surgical assessments are done on each patient prior to surgeries including complete physical examinations.
Blood tests are also done in the hospital ' s in-house lab and reviewed by the doctor to determine if the animal is healthy enough for the surgery and to assess any risk of anesthesia-related complications.
Midway has a dedicated critical care unit under the supervision of Lead Hospital Tech Amy Young for surgery patients who require overnight care. A technician is always on duty to monitor the patient and the vets are on call if they are needed overnight, something that isn ' t common at all clinics.
" One thing that we offer that a lot of others don ' t is we have a night time technician, Jeff Helton, here to watch them at night. That is super beneficial," said Lead Vet Tech Shauna Phelps. " No animal is ever left alone. That is comforting to the families to know that Jeff is here if an emergency arises at night. He can reach out to the doctor who will either come in if necessary or advise Jeff on what he needs to. Jeff treats every animal as if it were his own."
By doing all blood work in house, Lab and Pharmacy Manager Debbie Pieroni can provide results in about 15 minutes which helps the vets to get the needed care to the animals quicker than they would be able to if it had to be sent to an outside lab and returned.
Midway also has X-Ray machines and ultrasound machines on hand as well.
Preventive care is as important to pets
