A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER
A DIFFERENT KIND OF POWER
POWER CAN TAKE ON MANY FORMS,
AS WE’VE LEARNED OVER 10 YEARS OF
P U T T I N G T O G ET H E R O U R P OW E R I S S U E .
It can be financial, political, physical… but one thing
about power, no matter what form it takes, is that it’s almost
never inherently good or evil. Power simply is, and its
morality comes with what you do with it.
However, I wrote “almost never” there because there
definitely are powers that take on darker forms, and it’s
one we’ve covered in this issue. The power of addiction, at
its core, lies in its unique ability to devastate its victims by
robbing them of everything, spiritually
and physically.
I was deeply humbled and grateful to
those brave souls who shared their stories
with us this issue. It’s never easy to admit
you are powerless before an addiction,
much less share that story with the world.
But they all came forward, knowing that if
they could help one person through their
addiction it would be worth it.
It’s a horrible struggle, and one I’ve
fought in my own life. Hearing these
individuals and seeing their courage, I
could relate to their tribulations and was
deeply moved by their love for others.
Addicts are many things. People
pleasers, misanthropes, egomaniacs and
altrusits. Many have higher than average
IQs, and most of beautiful hearts. That
beauty, hidden as it is behind the stigma of
their disease, often goes unnoticed.
And it is a disease, as sure as cancer is
and just as deadly. Don’t ever let anyone
tell you it’s simply a weakness. I dare you
to read these stories and call any of these
magnificent people weak. (See page 72.)
I can only pray that this story on the
power of addiction will let you see those
who suffer this disease in a new light. They
should not be shunned, they should not be
pitied. In their kindness, they have more
power than you know.
I hope you enjoy this, our 10th annual
power issue. I’m grateful to once again
salute so many in our community who not
only wield such tremendous power, but
know how to wield it for the good of all.
