ADVENTURE. IT’ S JUST PART OF THE SOUTH’ S DNA.
As a kid growing up in the South, adventure meant roaming the neighborhood without a care in the world( or shoes on my feet). It meant swimming in ditches, sneaking up on frogs and snakes and catching them bare handed. That’ s what little kids do though, right? The other thing they do is grow up, which means the things we do for adventure grow up as well. As we get older, that Southern love of adventure takes the form of climbing a tree in the dead of night in the freezing cold hoping beyond hope that trophy buck will pass by beneath our toes
before they freeze up. Or we pursue that adventure on the ground, tracking man-eating boar through the great Southern wild.
Sometimes that love of adventure finds us navigating treacherous rocks on a four-wheeler, praying that our tires find purchase on the next cliff shelf and trying our damndest not to look down.
My frog-catching days might be behind me, but that doesn’ t mean my child-like love of adventure is gone. I found out just how alive it was when I visited The Gulches in South Carolina( see page 56.) I invited friend and client, Dr. Pete Ghaleb along with Daniel Defense Marketing VP, Thomas Carlson. I packed up the South magazine Hummer with my son Logan, my daughter Sophia, her friend Emma and photographer Michael Hrizuk, and we spent a day pursuing fourwheeled Southern adventure.
The best part of the experience was realizing what a great Southern equalizer adventure is. The good ol’ boys of The Gulches in their souped-up four-wheelers were incredibly welcoming to this pack of city slickers, and the connections we made there illustrated how Southern hospitality is still alive and well. Young, old, rich, poor … we’ re all Southern.
And we’ re all here to pursue that Southern adventure, whatever form it takes for us. Times may have changed since your own time chasing barefooted adventure, but there’ s still a great bit of world out there to explore. Check out this issue and find out what your next adventure will be.
Many thanks and keep reading,
