Niki De Saint Phalle
Self-trained French painter and sculptor, she created
action paintings by shooting bags of paint against
a blockboard backing. She also invented a new
form of sculpture, exploring the roles of women
through playful, monumental, brightly painted Nana
sculptures made of papier-mâché. Her sculpture
gardens in Tuscany and San Diego, which she
worked on for 20 years, are fantasy worlds inspired
by Gaudί. As she said ‘I wanted to give visitors,
especially children, a place of joy, where they could
enjoy art and nature together.’
