Boudicca
Boudicca (c. AD 25-61) led amongst men in a time
when women were believed to be more equal.
Opposing the Roman rule that took her land after the
death of her husband, the Iceni tribe were treated
like slaves; Boudicca was publicly flogged and
her daughters were raped. The qualities that I pay
homage to are not just the determination, courage
and intelligence in Boudicca’s revolt leading an army
of men, but as a mother trying to protect her
daughters and resolutely defying any lesser fate.
Her life and story still resonates today because
of this. She is my heroine.
