“ Both have shown flashes ,” said Calhoun . “ They are competing real hard . “ They both bring different attributes .” Alridge has displayed his athleticism on the Colquitt County basketball team and might have better straight-ahead speed , Calhoun said .
Lawson is stocky and well-built for a ninth-grader and performed well as the seventh-grade and eighthgrade teams ’ quarterback the last two seasons .
Calhoun said he hopes one of the two will take command of the starting job .
“ I prefer not to use two quarterbacks ,” he said . “ We ’ d like one guy emerge and take a majority of the snaps .”
The Packers top two rushers from the 2023 team are back although Dennis is getting a long look in the secondary .
Brown looks as if he is ready for a strong senior season .
The wild card in offensive coordinator and running backs coach John Cooper ’ s group could be Ty ’ Jaevian Lamar , a junior who did not play last season .
“ He give us a home run hitter ,” Calhoun said .
“ He ’ s a bigger back with breakaway speed . “ But he has never played on Friday night before .” Even if Dennis locks up a position in the secondary ,
Calhoun likes the trio of Brown , Lamar and Stokes .
Although the offensive line graduated several starters , including Daniels , coach Bryce Giddens ’ s group could again be strong .
Starting left tackle Khalil Collins has already committed to South Florida .
Senior Matthew Dillon , an outstanding wrestler , will take over at center and Jamaal Jackson and Tayshaun Hooks are working at guards . Big Cole Holder holds the right tackle position .
Junior Kaden Calhoun , who transferred in from Berrien , also is in the mix on the offensive line .
Both Collins and Hooks got plenty of under-fire snaps on the line last season .
The special teams unit , led by coach Brian Simmons , will be led by senior kicker Brett Fitzgerald , who already holds the school record for successful extra points with 177 .
He has 35 field goal attempts in a career that started when he was a freshman and he was 15-for-17 in three-point attempts last season .
Fitzgerald also has a shot at the school record for kicking points . He is only 42 points behind the mark of 324 , held by his brother Ryan , now the kicker at Florida State .
Snapper Chason Glenn also returns this season and , like Fitzgerald , appears headed to compete collegiately .
