Jack C . Hughston , MD , a pioneer in the field of sports medicine , helped create a specialty that enables athletes to overcome their injury and get back in the game .
Dr . Hughston ( 1917-2004 ) founded Hughston Clinic in 1949 with the idea that it would be open to average people , as well as famous athletes . However , it wasn ’ t until 1984 that Dr . Hughston achieved his dream of being able to focus primarily on sports injuries with the opening of Hughston Sports Medicine Hospital , the first facility of its kind in the country .
Dr . Hughston also made significant contributions to the study and advancement of sports medicine and orthopaedics with the establishment of a post-doctoral fellowship , as well as Hughston Foundation ; designed to promote advances in sports medicine and orthopaedics through research , education and communication .
