CAIRO — Whether it be on offense , defense or in region , the Cairo Syrupmakers will have a new look this upcoming season . Cairo lost a plethora of talent at the skilled positions on offense , while most of its defensive starters departed from last season as well . It is a considerable turnover of talent for a team moving to Region 1-3A .
“ Right now , we ’ ve got so many spots that are open for competition . We ’ ve got a pretty young team , inexperienced team in a lot of positions ” Cairo coach David Coleman said . “ We ’ re competing , and we ’ re battling right now , and that brings out the best in us . We ’ re just going to keep doing that .”
Rising junior quarterback Bryce Wilson is a favorite to take over the offensive reigns following the graduation of Juderick Gee-Simmons , a first-team All-Region selection last year . Freshman Bryce Puckett is a potential starter for the future . Both have received valuable reps during the team ’ s 7-on-7 schedule this summer .
“ We have some guys that are getting some good quality reps over the summer ,” Coleman said . “ We got a pretty good dose of that in June and keep it up in July . It ’ s been good for us . The summer has been great for us .”
The Syrupmakers will feature new faces at wide receiver as well , following the graduations of Amario Powell and Corey Baker . Seniors
Dmauri Wooden shows off his defensive form during a Cairo practice .
Cam Brown , Chris Stewart and Aaron Griffin provide experience at the position .
“ We ’ ll have some older guys playing in those roles it looks like . We ’ re not experienced there as we have been . But we do have some older players that will be helping us out at the wide receiver position ,” Coleman said . “ We do have some older players that may not have the game experience as we ’ ve had in the past couple of years . But we look for them to step up .”
One familiar face returning on offense includes sophomore speedster Bryian Duncan . He tallied 524 rushing yards and five touchdowns as a freshman . He will compete
with Xiquavian Teal for playing time at running back .
“ Brian ’ s a guy that does a lot of different stuff for us . We look for him to be a versatile player ,” Coleman said .
The one position the Syrupmakers have experience returning on offense is along the offensive line . Junior Darrius Simmons , senior Luis Martin , senior Jace Jones and senior R . W . Jones return up front , along with senior Gabe Greenberg , who was sidelined last year because of injury .
“ It ’ s good to have ( experience ) up front , it certainly is . Those guys do a good job . They help lead the football team . They ’ re the kind of
