Consistency key to Cairo success in 2022

CAIRO — There are many keys to a successful season for any high school program . For the Cairo Syrupmakers this year , those keys are consistency and taking each day one day at a time . At least that ’ s the focus during the summer for first-year coach David Coleman .
“ We really just want to focus on taking it one game at a time , one week at a time , one game at a time and just go from there . That ’ s really how we try to look at things . That ’ s the mindset we really want to try to build on our team ,” Coleman said . “ We ’ re just trying to find consistency everywhere . We want our kids to be consistent . That ’ s really the word for us , consistent .”
A lack of consistency contributed to the Syrupmakers ’ slow start last year . They started 2-3 before reeling off five straight wins before losing in the second round of the state playoffs .

Cairo returns its share of talent and experience at the key positions to build that consistency necessary to compete in the new-look Region 1-4A , starting at quarterback . Braylon Robinson returns for his senior year after throwing for 1,274 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior . He provides much-needed experience behind center .
“ Any time you can have your quarterback back that played the year before , that ’ s a benefit to your team , absolutely ,” Coleman said .
He has a talented receiver returning as well in senior Tyree Kelly . He compiled 363 receiving yards and three touchdowns last year . The two connected multiple times in the team ’ s spring scrimmage against Colquitt County . “ Tyree has done a great job for us . He ’ s played a lot of snaps in the past for us , and he ’ s back for another year . That ’ s going to be a good thing for our team ,” Coleman said . “ They hooked up several times that night ( against Colquitt County ). It was good .”
