Central looking to build depth ahead of move to Region 1-6A

THOMASVILLE — A new coach and a new region await Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets football in 2022 . Justin Rogers ’ first year as the Yellow Jackets coach comes as the team transitions to Region 1-6A .
Rogers discussed the move following the Yellow Jackets ’ most recent stay in Region 1-4A .
“ My outlook is I feel like we compete in our new region very good . We want to compete for a region championship , host a playoff game and start making runs in the playoffs ,” Rogers said . “ I think we can do that .”
The team ’ s new region includes Houston County , Lee County , Northside-Warner Robins , Tift County and Veterans . All were in at least Class 5A or higher last year . But the challenge will not change the approach that the Yellow Jackets embrace the season with .
“ The biggest approach is , and it ’ s going to sound cliché , but it ’ s our philosophy and it ’ s what I believe , is win the day . Have the best day you can in preparation leading up to Friday ,” Rogers said . “ Ball is ball . It

doesn ’ t matter if it ’ s 5A , 6A , 4A , 7A . At the end of the day , ball is ball . Depth is where it gets you in the bigger ball , just making sure that you ’ ve got good depth there to compete with those teams . We ’ ve got to continue to develop depth .”
That will be the Yellow Jackets ’ main preseason objective , along with finalizing the defensive line rotation and also finding another starter at wide receiver .
“ Our kids are working so hard . They ’ re buying in and allowing themselves to be coached ,” Rogers said . “ We ’ ve made vast improvements , I think even from the spring game . But we ’ ve still got a long way to go , but who doesn ’ t right ?”
Central returns five offensive starters and seven on defense . While the offensive line will have multiple new starters , it ’ s a group that ’ s garnered praise from its new head coach .
“ I think it ’ s going to be a good group . I like the O-line . I think our five O-linemen and even our sixth and seventh off to the side are going to be pretty good ,” he added .
