THOMASVILLE — A talented and deep Brookwood Warriors team is eyeing another region championship and deeper run in the state playoffs this upcoming season .
Brookwood returns four of its five starting offensive linemen and eight starters on offense and defense to a team that finished 5-7 last year with a GISA Region 3-AAA title . The returning experience provides encouragement and optimism to Brookwood faithful , including head coach Shane Boggs .
“ I ’ d say you ’ d have to go back to 2016 to see this many returning starters off one team . We ’ ve got a ton of guys contributing ( this summer ), literally from seniors to some freshmen that are doing some pretty good things ,” Boggs said . “ We ’ ve had a great summer , just from an investment perspective and starting to see that investment pay off for a bunch of these guys .
“ I know that the lack of depth is one of the contributing factors to disappointing seasons sometimes . I think every coach is trying to build that , not just in the summer , but really you ’ ve got to be trying to build it throughout the year . It starts in the first day of the offseason all the way up to the end of the season . It ’ s good to see guys competing .”
The Warriors have the talent to compete against any team in the GIAA . Junior Rodge Waldrop passed for 3,158 yards and 32 touchdowns last year . Senior Destin Moore finished with 1,018 receiving yards , including 272 against
Westfield in the playoffs . Junior TJ Thomas finished with 981 receiving yards and had a school record 14 receptions against Westfield .
Boggs is especially high on senior Grant Gaston , who could be a star two-way player this year .
“ Grant is a big 6-4 guy that had 750 yards receiving . He ’ s in the top echelon of just having motors . This kid plays really , really hard and has done tremendous things . This will be his third year starting at defensive end and second year starting at tight end . He ’ s going to make plays on both sides of the ball ,” Boggs said .
