small groups or families. Famously, he would
begin without a script and improvise with
actors to create characters and storylines.
But since 1999, Leigh has expanded into
working (not exclusively) on period pieces
with ‘Topsy-Turvy’, a study of Gilbert and
Sullivan’s making of ‘The Mikado’.

In 2014 he made ‘Mr Turner’ which followed
the final years of the painter JMW Turner,
who was played by Timothy Spall.
