AUTUMN | WINTER 2019 digital technology has come to the fore and allowed artists to alter images in new ways. Sitting perhaps somewhat uneasily with traditional photomontage, digital design packages have expanded the ability of artists to arrange, scale, colourise and compose images. Some artists have eschewed these new technologies and continue to work in the tradition of cutting and collaging from existing material. Others have incorporated some digital treatment within their work. This exhibition features three Irish Artists who work within this changing area of image- making: Laura McMorrow is a visual artist based in Leitrim; Joe Lee is an artist and film-maker living in Dublin and Sean Hillen is a native of Northern Ireland whose notable works include ‘The Troubles’ and ‘Irelantis’. The Artists Laura McMorrow was born in 1986 and graduated from Fine Art Painting in Limerick School of Art in 2008. She holds a Masters in Fine Art from Ulster University (2012). Recent solo exhibitions include The Lost Acre, Leitrim Sculpture Centre (2018). Recent group exhibitions include ‘Greenhouse’, Devonshire Collective (2017) and Barnacle at the 126 Gallery in Galway (2019). Explorers Yoho Glacier by Laura McMorrow Drawing on a rich tradition of photomontage as a means of creating new images and meaning from old, the exhibition ‘Cut/Paste’ incorporates pieces from three Irish artists as well as looking at the historical development of this art-form Photomontage methods of physically cutting and re-arranging images have undergone a transformation in the past three decades as www.thesourceartscentre.ie Laura’s practice incorporates video installation, sculpture, collage, and painting and her work is an exploration of perception and reality, fiction and fantasy and of interplanetary and otherworldliness. She says ‘ There is a pseudoscientific aesthetic to the work, which has been influenced by science fiction films and B-movies. With recent developments in the use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) in film making, McMorrow is drawn to the craftsmanship of cinema history.’ She lives and works in Leitrim.
