AUTUMN | WINTER 2019 THEATRE FILM A Woman At War aka (Kona fer í stríð) The Hostage Monday 18 November to Saturday 23 November Brendan Behan’s classic is a play with songs. In 1957 he wrote in the Irish language ‘An Giall’ which was later translated and revised and presented as The Hostage in 1959. The story tells of a young English soldier who is kidnapped by the IRA and held hostage in a Dublin brothel/lodging house. The assortment of house residents and their colorful visitors ensure that this is a play of non-stop entertainment. The play reflects on history but the past is never allowed to get in the way of fun and enjoyment. ‘The Hostage’ is a bizarre mix of serious themes, love stories, comedy and irreverence. Allied to this, impromptu music, dance and songs give a music hall feel to proceedings. Above all this is a show to enjoy.
