The Hostage
Monday 18 November to

Brendan Behan’s classic is a play with songs. In
1957 he wrote in the Irish language ‘An Giall’
which was later translated and revised and
presented as The Hostage in 1959.
The story tells of a young English soldier who is
kidnapped by the IRA and held hostage in a
Dublin brothel/lodging house. The assortment
of house residents and their colorful visitors
ensure that this is a play of non-stop
entertainment. The play reflects on history but
the past is never allowed to get in the way of
fun and enjoyment. ‘The Hostage’ is a bizarre
mix of serious themes, love stories, comedy and
irreverence. Allied to this, impromptu music,
dance and songs give a music hall feel to
proceedings. Above all this is a show to enjoy.

continue to wage environmental war while
taking on the mantle of loving mother? Or will
the authorities catch up with her clandestine

“Woman at War is an excellent representation
of human will and the need to do what is right
even if this goes against the structure of
society” – Film Ireland
