AUTUMN | WINTER 2019
INTRODUCTION
The longer evenings are one of the first things to suggest that
Autumn is coming and with that in mind we have prepared an
interesting and varied programme for you to while away some
of those evenings here at The Source.
Our film season returns with a film made in Tipperary that has
been gaining some recognition over the past year. ‘This is
Nicholas’ details Nicholas Ryan Purcell’s emergence as a film-
maker on the autism spectrum and is well worth a look. We will
chat to Nicholas at the screening. As well as this we have a
number of acclaimed films – Asif Kapadia’s documentary on
Diego Maradona, the Italian magic realist film ‘Happy as
Lazzaro’ and ‘Capernaum’ which is a beguiling movie detailing
a child’s life in Beirut, amongst others.
Theatre also begins locally with ‘The Irish Story – An Orphan’s
Tale’ from Jokerthief Theatre Company; Thurles Drama Group
present their performance of Brendan Behan’s ‘The Hostage’
and we have interesting social theatre like Joanne Ryan’s
‘Eggsistentialism’ and ‘Wet Paint’ which was written by and
features ‘The Young Offenders’ Shane Casey.
The programme is chock full of variety – music from Telephone
Explosions, Seskin Lane, The Contempo Quartet and The
Fureys; Ballet Ireland’s ‘Swan Lake’ and Tipperary Dance
Platform’s ‘Una Vera Mas’. Literary events feature Dave Rudden,
Cat Doyle and Ian Maleney and we have an important arts
exhibition which looks at photomontage in Ireland. There’s a
full article on this in this issue which outlines the exhibition, the
history and the changing nature of this specific area of visual
arts. A number of workshops and talks are included alongside
this exhibition and are noted also.
Remember if you are interested in hosting an event, a theatre
performance, film screening, workshop or anything else, please
let us know as we are always looking to develop cultural activity
in the region. Send me an email to: director@sourcearts.ie and
we’ll see what we can do.
See you at The Source,
