September 2022 was supposed to be the start of a new adventure for Robbie Donze . The paperwork had just been finalized for his purchase of the Sea Trek , a 65-foot fishing charter boat known for family-friendly day trips during the week and weekend trips to Dry Tortugas National Park , about 150 miles south of its home dock at Ft . Myers Beach , Florida .
“ Our first trip was supposed to leave the day after ,” Donze said , referring to September 30 , one day after Hurricane Ian hit the Ft . Myers area , causing more than $ 50 billion of damage and claiming more than 150 lives .
The hurricane produced winds measured at 150-155 mph at landfall , just shy of the 157 mph threshold for a Category 5 rating . Beyond the catastrophic winds , a storm surge of up to 14 feet followed , causing flash flooding and major damage to homes , vehicles , and watercraft .
