In conclusion , music is crucial to constructing and reinforcing character identity within videogames . Through analysing the 2-D role-playing game ‘ Undertale ’ ( Toby Fox , 2015 ) and the single-player adventure game ‘ Night in the Woods ’ ( Infinite Fall , 2017 ), it allowed for a clear comparison of the different musical methods that can construct numerous effective character identities . Each of these games allowed players to pick their own narrative and gameplay path ; the music in each game reflected the narrative routes chosen . As suggested by Cohen ( 2001 ), to be able to create a strong level of identification with a videogame character it requires an ‘ extreme absorption in the text ’ and ‘ an intense emotional experience ’ ( Cohen , 2001 , p . 253 ). Each of the two games created an intense level of immersion and emotional experiences through their use of music . However , certain elements of music can amplify certain stereotypical values and roles in regard to character identity .
