Phil239 the exceptions to this vague rule , for example your duty as a parent to always put your child first is ridiculous in situations that may have a higher priority . If your child needed to eat lunch but you witnessed a traffic accident and urgently needed to help people involved , it would be morally wrong to leave just so your child could eat their lunch . But even here the complex interplay between impartiality and morality can be observed in the case of the accident as , morally speaking , you ought to act impartially and tend to the needs of the crash victims as opposed to giving special preference to your child .
My goal throughout this essay has been to show that there is an evident role for impartiality in certain spheres of morality but in other , more institutional spheres it does not work as well as we would initially hope . Through my discussion of how important impartiality is for democracy , judicial fairness and ‘ public spheres ’ in general I hope to have shown that when placed against a different standard ( the ‘ private sphere ’), we can observe the boundaries of the impartial thesis and also where they intersect each other .
